What Causes Bad Breath?

Whatcausesbadbreathhires Thehouseofmouth

Bad breath (otherwise known as Halitosis) is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grows in the mouth. You often leave traces of food in your mouth especially in between your teeth after you eat, so if you don’t brush or floss regularly, bacteria accumulates in your mouth. The sulfur compounds that the bacteria leave behind is what commonly makes your breath smell.

Certain foods like garlic and onions can also contribute to bad breath as they contain aromatic oils. Smoking is another major cause of bad breath as well as underlying health conditions like gum disease.

It is important to note, there are causes of bad breath that may not be so superficial, and that actually need to be addressed by your doctor or dentist.

Dry mouth (otherwise known as Xerostomia) is a condition that can also cause bad breath and you will only be able to treat your dry mouth once the cause has been identified, so it is important to talk to your dental practitioner or doctor about the issue. Your doctor or dentist may change your prescribed dosage or medication that they believe cause your dry mouth. You can also help treat it with some of our dry mouth treatment products.

Some diseases, cancers and conditions like metabolic disorders, can also cause bad breath. Chronic reflux and GERD are common causes of bad breath.

Infections or chronic inflammation in your nose, sinuses or throat, which can lead to a post nasal drip, can also be causing your bad breath.

People often find bad breath embarrassing, especially in public, and it can cause anxiety in some people. Bad breath (aka halitosis) can be a major setback, not only for your self-esteem but also your overall health.

Does a Dry Mouth Cause Bad Breath?

Saliva helps clean the mouth, removing the particles that cause bad breath in your mouth. Suffering from Dry Mouth or Xerostomia results in reduced saliva production and can also cause problems eating, speaking and disrupting your sleep. When saliva is decreased in your mouth, it is harder to cleanse the mouth, which causes bad breath.

Sleep naturally causes dry mouth, leading to bad breath, which is usually referred to as “morning breath.” It worsens when you sleep with your mouth open, which dries your saliva faster, causing dry mouth. Chronic dry mouth is a serious condition which may indicate underlying issues with the salivary glands, this should always be addressed by a dental practitioner or doctor.
